1. Four Indians make it to the latest annual Forbes’s ‘Heroes of Philanthropy’ list for Asia Pacific region.
Rohini Nilekani, wife of Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, has given away about $40 million over the years for philanthropy.
Ajay Piramal, a serial entrepreneur and pharma tycoon, is said to have donated $6 million over the past four years to his Piramal Foundation.
Desh Bandhu Gupta, founder and chairman of drug-maker Lupin, has endowed $3.3 million to his charitable foundation past year.
The Youngest among the four Indians is 45-year Ashish Dhawan, a former Goldman Sachs banker.
2. Luis Suarez, controversial striker of Uruguay’s national football team, is banned from all football activities for four months by FIFA. He also has to cough up a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs ($112,000). He has been punished for biting the shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s match against Italy in the group stage of FIFA World Cup 2014.
3. Kerala to host 35th National Games from January 31 to February 14 next year. Ammu’ the Great Hornbill – is the mascot of the games which will see competiton for a total of 365 gold medals, an equal number of silver medals and 477 bronze medals.
4. Centre has appointed additional secretary AK Dubey as the interim Chairman of India’s largest mining company Coal India Ltd. He will serve the office till a full-time chairman is appointed.
5. Indian-origin judge, Justice VK Rajah becomes the eighth Attorney-General of Singapore. He succeeds Steven Chong to this post.
6. B Ashok has been appointed as the Chairman of ‘Indian Oil Corporation’ – nation’s largest oil firm. He will succeed RS Butola as such.
