1. Olympic silver-medalist Shooter Vijay Kumar to lead the Indian contingent as flag bearer in the opening ceremony of 20th Commonwealth Games to be held at Glasgow, Scotland. India is fielding their second largest ever contingent of 215 athletes in this largest ever commonwealth games to take place from July 23 to August 3, 2014. The games will see over 4,000 athletes competing in 17 sports for 261 medal events and have 71 participating nations.

2. Central government decides to observe the first week of 2015-16 as water conservation week and the fiscal as water conservation year. The announcement was aired by Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharti in the Lok Sabha.

4. England’s captain and midfielder Steven Gerrard quits international football. He made his international debut in 2000 and played 114 matches for the national side scoring 21 goals. His is the second high-profile retirement after the German captain Philipp Lahm’s since the end of 2014 World Cup.

5. Famous Indian actress Suchitra Sen’s ancestral home in Bangladesh is to be converted into a museum. Supreme Court of Bangladesh passed this judgement after freeing the property from the occupation OF Imam Ghazali Institute. Imam Ghazali Institute, operated by fundamentalist organization Jamaat-e-Islami, had occupied the house for decades.
