1. Telanagana is born as the 29th state of India on June 2, 2014; Telugu Rashtra Samithi supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao becomes its inaugural Chief Minister. ESL Narasimhan will serve as governor for both states; Telangana and residual Andhra Pradesh. KC Rao led the movement for a separate state of Telangana since 2001 after breaking ranks with his former leader Chandrababu Naidu of TDP.
2. World No Tobacco Day 2014 is observed across the world on May 31. he day is celebrated to raise awareness of the adverse effects of tobacco use, which currently lead to 5.4 million deaths worldwide every year. The day was instituted by WHO in 1987.
3. Salvador Sanchez Ceren has been sworn in as the new President of El Salvador. He won the presidency by pipping conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) party candidate Norman Quijano with less than a quarter of a percentage point.
4. Kolkata Knight Riders clinches the IPL 2014 crown by defeating Kings XI Punjab by three wickets in the final. This is their second title triumph after the maiden one in 2012.
5. President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Kamal Nath as the Protem Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha. Protem Speaker serves as the interim speaker till the election of the full-fledged new speaker.
