1. Juan Manuel Santos has been elected as President of Colombia for the second consecutive term. Santos, who heads a centre-right coalition, secured 51 percent of votes as against his rightwing opponent Oscar Ivan Zuluaga 45 percent.
2. World Day to Combat Desertification 2014 is observed across the globe on June 17. Approximately 1.5 billion people globally depend on degrading areas for their livelihoods. The area is also home to nearly half of the world’s very poor (42%) people.
3. Delhi has become the first ‘kerosene-free city’ in the country. It means government is issuing no subsidised kerosene in the national capital and thus helping the country save upto Rs 200 crore every year with the move.
4. Indian left-arm spinner Murli Kartik retires from all forms of cricket. He played eight Tests, 37 ODIs and one Twenty20 international for India.
5. Government launches the SME Finance Facilitation Centre. The centre – an initiative by CII, will facilitate access to finance and credit for SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) across countrywide.
