1. India ranks at 143rd position out of 162 countries in the Global Peace Index 2014. Iceland retains the top position as the world’s most peaceful place while Syria has replaced Afghanistan as the most violent place in the world. India is ranked among 20 most violent places in the world and only better than Pakistan and Afghanistan in South Asia. Bhutan has been ranked as the most peaceful country.

2. Indian Railways have hiked the passenger fare by 14.2% in all classes and freight tariff by 6.5% with effect from June 25. For passenger fare category, a flat 10% increase has been done in all classes and an additional 4.2% increase was done as per fuel adjustment component linked revision scheme. This fare hike was required in order to make Indian railways financially independent as it is losing Rs 900 crore every month on passenger segment.

3. India overtakes US as the largest importer of Oil from Nigeria in the world. India now imports about 30% of its total 2.5 million barrels of production per day; as against US purchase of about 250,000 barrels. This is a result of US reducing its dependence on Nigeria’s crude oil in recent months.

4. Center to set up an Expert Committee to draft National Policy on Rubber. It will include representative of various stakeholders of Rubber Sector. It will examine the issues relating to production, development and exports of rubber and related products.

5. ndia-born Pratishtha Khanna is one of the 10 people to be honoured as ‘Champions of Change’ by the White House. The Champions of Change programme of the White House is meant to honour individuals doing extraordinary things to empower and inspire members of their communities.

6. Indo-Mexican scientist Dr Sanjaya Rajaram gets World Food Prize 2014. He receives the $ 250,000 prize for his incredible contribution to global wheat production through developing around 480 varieties of disease-resistant wheat.
