1. Sumitra Mahajan becomes the 2nd woman to be elected as Lok Sabha Speaker after Meira Kumar. The BJP MP from Indore has been elected from there for the 8th consecutive time this election. She has never lost the Lok Sabha elections since 1989.

2. Pepper : World’s first robot to read emotions, unveiled in Japan. Japanese fascination with robotic companion has triggered another unique roll-out of a robot that express emotions like human – another first for the world of technology. The manufacturer, mobile carrier Softbank, is all set to install Japanese homes with this humanoid robot, called Pepper, that interacts, entertain and has emotive ability.

3. Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi has been ranked the 2nd best airport in the world for its service quality among airports handling 25-40 million passengers per annum for the third consecutive year. Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is at fifth spot (same category) in the index that has been published by the Airport Council International.

4. India has been elected to the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for the next four years (2014-18). It will be the nation’s 2nd stint there after the first one from 2006 to 2010.

5. Lieutenant General (retired) Abhijit Guha of Indian Army becomes one of the 5 members appointed for UN Expert Panel on Technology and Innovation in UN Peacekeeping. The panel is headed by Ms Jane Holl Lute of United States.

6. The All India Institute of Medical Science (New Delhi) is all set to become the country’s first ‘green hospital’. Being a green hospital means it will predominantly dump conventional sources of energy in favour of green energy for its functioning. That means using solar energy, water harvesting and better waste management.
