1. Bashar Al-assad registers a landslide victory in Syrian Presidential election; gets another 7 year term as head of conflict-ridden country. He polled 88.7 per cent as against 4.3 per cent and 3.2 percent of his two challengers Hassan al-Nouri and Maher Hajjar respectively. Syria is marred by a bloody 3-year-old uprising against his rule that has devastated the country.
2. Hashim Amla has been appointed the new test cricket captain (first black) of South Africa. He succeeds Graeme Smith as such who retired in March 2014 after over a decade at helm. He is the first permanent black captain of the side, and 2nd black overall after Ashwell Prince who served as a stopgap captain during the tour of Sri Lanka in July and August 2006.
3. Its World Environment Day today. It aims to raise global awareness to encourage positive environmental action in order to protect nature and the planet Earth. ‘Small Island Developing States’ is the theme for this year celebration in sync with the UN designation of 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States.
4. The Central Aquaculture Pathology Laboratory of Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA), Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), becomes the first aquaculture pathology laboratory in the country to be accredited by NABL (National Accreditation Board For Testing & Calibration Laboratories).
5. The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs signs an MoU with Grant Thornton India LLP to develop capacity of the Indian companies for effective implementation of the CSR Rules laid down as per Section 135 of the Companies Act 2013.
