1-Centre decides to delegate the powers of registration, survey and certification of Indian fishing boats, irrespective of their size or length, to states and union territories. Earlier, fishing boats over 20 meters long were required to be registered by mercantile marine departments under the Directorate General of Shipping.

2- Libyan PM Abdullah al-Thinni steps down with his entire cabinet; fresh election likely to follow. The seat of legislature has had to be shifted to Tobruk in the far east to escape the ongoing conflict between rival militia in capital Tripoli.

3- Its 5th ‘International Day against Nuclear Tests’ today (Aug 2014). The annual event, in existence since 2010, seeks to intensify efforts to make the world free of nuclear weapons.

4- Ahmet Davutoglu becomes the new Prime Minister of Turkey. He replaces Recep Tayyip Erdogan who is now serving as the nation’s first directly elected President.

5- India’s first All India Institute of Ayurveda, along the lines of AIIMS, to come up at Jasola (Delhi). The 3000-year old medical system is considered to be the world’s oldest. It will be a referral-cum-teaching facility.
