1- Haider Abadi, a Shi’ite Islamist, is to be the new Prime Minister of Iraq after the national parliament approved his appointment. The Kurdish and Sunni minorities have also found place in the cabinet as a measure to showcase unified face against the rampaging Islamic State threat. He has a herculean task ahead of bringing the nation to normalcy and winning back the lost territory.

2- Chandrakala Padia becomes the first women chairperson of Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla. She, currently the Vice-Chancellor of Maharaja Ganga Singh University, succeeds Gopalkrishna Gandhi as such.

3- Saakshar Bharat Awards 2014 presented by the President on the International Literacy Day (September 8, 2014). The awards are allotted to encourage institutions working in the field of literacy and skill developments.

4- Scientist have unearthed first the largest ever dinosaur (probably) and then we get the news of discovery of a whole new species of the same. Ohio University scientists have dug out a new species of Titanosaurian Dinosaur in Tanzania. The species, found ingrained in a cliff wall in the Rukwa Basin of southwestern Tanzania, has been named Rukwatitan Bisepultus.

5- US Open witnessed a new unheralded champion this year in men’s singles section.

    Croatia’s Marin Cilic conquers his first grand slam having dashed the hope of Kei Nishikori – the first man from Asia (and Japan) to reach a Slam final – with an emphatic scoreline of 6-3, 6-3 and 6-3.
    All the big names had fallen by the wayside after the injury-induced pull-out of defending champion Rafael Nadal.
